The end of the home phone?

A recent report has asked whether home phones could soon be phased out and replaced by the mobile broadband options being made available around the country.
Figures from uSwitch have shown that more British consumers currently have a mobile phone than a landline.
Additionally, the services that now allow people to access the internet from anywhere with a mobile connection could render a home phone unnecessary for some, the Times reports.
One benefit of using mobile broadband services is that it avoids the initial installation costs associated with some domestic broadband services, it adds.
Wireless services - which use existing mobile phone signals to transmit data - are also said to be of benefit to those living in parts of the country where high-speed residential broadband is difficult to obtain.
Earlier this month, Carl Henric Svanberg, president and chief executive of telecoms giant Ericsson, claimed that the trend toward mobile broadband around the world is a positive process for businesses, consumers and society at large.
