Virgin Media has announced that it has attracted 88,400 new broadband subscribers in the first three months of 2008.

In results published today (May 8th), the broadband provider also reported a reduced on-net churn rate of 1.2 per cent - its lowest level since 2004.

Neil Berkett, chief executive of Virgin Media, said: "Our first quarter results represent another solid operational performance … customers are continuing to respond positively to our compelling consumer propositions. We remain focused on leading in next generation broadband."

He added that the group was also committed to revolutionising on-demand TV and improving customer services. As well as increasing the number of broadband subscribers, the firm also attracted 36,800 new TV subscribers during the first quarter of 2008.

The company also asserted that it plans to launch its 50 Mbps broadband service later this year.

In other recent announcements, Virgin Media has unveiled plans to deliver BBC iPlayer services to TV customers.
