Orange reprimanded for BT comparison
16th July 2008
Orange has been rapped by the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) after it was decided that a comparison made between BT’s broadband services and its own was misleading.
The broadband provider compared its Home Max service to BT’s Broadband Option 3 and Calling Plan Option 2, telling customers they could "save over £190 when you switch from BT".
Following a challenge, the ASA found that Orange’s advertisement had failed to recognise a number of benefits that customers would receive if they stayed with BT.
In upholding the complaint, the ASA said in a statement: "We considered that as the ad was so specific and highlighted the significant features those BT customers would gain by switching to Orange it should also have highlighted those significant features which those BT customers would lose by making a switch."
Orange has now been told to amend the advert, ensuring that the significant differences highlighted are stated prominently.
