O2 in 100Mbps plans

18th July 2008

O2 is reported to be considering following BT in rolling out a high-speed fibre-optic broadband network to parts of the UK.

After BT’s announcement of a £1.5 billion investment into fibre-to-the-home, expected to service 10 million homes by 2012, O2 has said that it too would be interested in providing 100Mbps offerings.

The broadband provider is said to be waiting on industry watchdog Ofcom to change regulations relating to competition in the market before making the move.

"We need clear and unambiguous regulation in place before we start shelling out huge sums of money," the company told O2.

Virgin Media joined BT and O2 in calling for a change in regulations to encourage investment.

"We strongly support BT’s call for a stable regulatory environment that rewards both current and future investment," said the firm. "We will continue working closely with Ofcom and the government to achieve this."

Virgin Media has announced plans to roll out a 50Mbps broadband service to 12 million homes in the UK.
