Sky launches music download service

An ISP has announced its plans to offer broadband subscribers a music download service.
Sky will launch the new subscription service and has teamed up with Universal Music to offer hundreds of songs digitally.
The move comes as the music industry has been putting ISPs under pressure to disconnect broadband users who are found to be illegally downloading files.
Commenting on Sky’s move into a competitive market place which includes Apple’s iTunes, Sky’s chief operating officer, Mike Darcey, told the Daily Telegraph: "We are not telling everyone ‘abandon iTunes’, but we will say ‘you don’t need to go to the iTunes store to buy your music’.
While Universal Music International chief executive, Lucian Grainge, added: "UK consumers will welcome a safe, state-of-the-art service and legal alternative to those services which exploit musicians without compensation."
It is thought that packages offered by the broadband provider will include unlimited streaming and a basic allowance of downloads.
