How do I get the most accurate speed test results?

• A) make sure you are not downloading anything
• B) shut down any software that uses the internet
• C) shut down any other computers on your network
• D) ensure all broadband cables are properly attached

This broadband speed test gives the most accurate results on fixed line broadband connections which do not have to rely on wireless, wi-fi or mobile broadband signal strength. Designed for the home user, it works equally well on ADSL or cable (fibre optic) broadband.

Please note that our broadband speed test results are an indication of your connection speed only and results may be distorted if you are checking your broadband via a home wireless network, via satellite, a wireless hotspot or mobile broadband dongle.

How does this speed test work?

When you start the speed test above, the tool tests your broadband speed by downloading and uploading "packets" of data via "pings". The speed at which these things happen allows us to assess your broadband speed in seconds.

Do many people use this broadband speed test?

Absolutely. By August 2008, we had tested over 600,000 broadband connections since launching in January that year. Some "testers" were pleased with their broadband speed test results and some were disappointed.
