Broadband & free wireless router explained

Wireless broadband (also known as wi-fi) is broadband transmitted via a router. It allows multiple users access a broadband connection wirelessly throughout the house.

How do wireless routers work?

A wireless router converts and broadcasts the signals coming across your telephone wire around a fixed area, working on the on same principle as a cordless home telephone.

This broadcasted signal is then picked up by wireless-enabled devices like laptops and gaming consoles, giving them wireless broadband connectivity throughout the house.

What wireless routers do:

Provide wireless internet to wireless-enabled devices such as computers, laptops and gaming consoles.
Can be used to make VoIP calls.
Facilitate digital TV.

How to ‘Go Wireless’

You will need to set up a simple WLAN (wireless local area network) – but don’t worry – most broadband providers provide simple ‘plug and play’ wireless equipment which involves little more than:

Plugging in a wireless modem/ router
Loading up a CD-ROM with the wireless broadband software.
